Understanding the Basics of Rabbit Nutrition

Proper nutrition is essential for keeping rabbits healthy and happy. The foundation of their diet is high-quality hay, which should make up 80% of their daily intake. Hay provides the fiber necessary for a healthy digestive system and helps prevent gut stasis, a life-threatening condition. It also supports dental health by naturally wearing down their constantly growing teeth. Opt for fresh, dust-free varieties like Meadow, Timothy, or Orchard hay, and avoid low-quality, dusty, or brown hay often found in chain pet stores. Alfalfa hay is suitable only for rabbits under six months due to its high protein and calcium content.

Dried forage, such as plantain, hazelnut leaves, and sunflower petals, is a safe and enriching addition to your rabbit’s diet. These provide variety and nutrition without the risks associated with fresh greens like carrots, cabbage, and broccoli, which can upset their delicate digestive systems.

Pellets are a supplemental addition and should be limited to one egg cup per rabbit per day, ensuring they are high in fiber and free from sugars or seeds.

Rabbits also need constant access to fresh water in a bowl, not a bottle, to stay properly hydrated. Treats should only be given occasionally.

By focusing on these nutritional essentials, you can help your rabbits thrive.
